If you have had a hemipelvectomy with no reconstruction, you’ll see different members of the rehabilitation team to make sure all your needs are met. Rehabilitation for hemipelvectomy’s is different for everyone.
What is a hemipelvectomy without reconstruction?
Depending on where your sarcoma is in your pelvis, you may have an internal hemipelvectomy without reconstruction. This is where the affected bony section of the hemipelvis is removed along with muscles and it is not reconstructed with a prosthetic metal implant.
Physiotherapy for hemipelvectomy without reconstruction
After your surgery, you’ll see a physiotherapist. This is usually the day after surgery.
A physiotherapist can help you by:
- recommending a comfortable position in bed
- giving you advice on swelling and pain relief
- giving you exercises to build strength in your operated leg
- helping you with moving from a bed to a wheelchair, and standing (if possible) with a frame
- planning for discharge home
- referring you to local outpatient or community therapy services
Occupational therapy for hemipelvectomy without reconstruction
You will see an occupational therapist (OT) while you’re recovering in hospital. They’ll help you by discussing how you’ll manage your activities and daily life after leaving hospital.
An OT can also help you by:
- showing you techniques to be more independent with daily activities
- showing you how to move safely, for example from a bed to a chair
- referring you to local wheelchair services for getting a wheelchair
- teaching you how to use a wheelchair
- giving you support or equipment for discharge
- giving you advice about using a wheelchair at home, and if needed, arranging a local occupational therapist to assess your home for equipment and accessibility.
You might be referred to other members of the rehabilitation team too. Speak to your physiotherapist, clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or specialist about other forms of rehabilitation you might benefit from.
