Rare But Real: Let's walk to make sarcoma seen

Rare But Real Logo on Transparent background

Most cancer charities ask you to walk. We’re asking you to be seen.

It’s Rare but it’s Real. This is our message to the nation. Walk with us in the summer, it’s more than fundraising events, it’s a call to action. By participating, you’re joining a community determined to bring sarcoma into the spotlight, advocate for early diagnosis, and push for equitable access to care.

Whether you’ve lived with sarcoma, supported someone who has, or are just beginning to learn about it, you’ll know this much is true: sarcoma is rare, but its impact is very real. Each year, 5,900 people in the UK are diagnosed – yet awareness, recognition, and treatment options still lag far behind where they need to be.

We walk to remember the people we’ve lost, we walk to support those living with sarcoma, we walk to celebrate, we walk for hope, we walk to be seen.

About Rare but Real Walk

Our Rare but Real Walks are returning this year, with brand new locations across the UK. It’s all about bringing friends and families together to raise awareness.

We’d love for you to join the community and come together to walk 3km, 5km or 10km to help more people know about sarcoma.

As you walk, you’ll be walking for someone. Whether it’s someone you know personally or the community as a whole. You’ll have their name on display. When you cross that finish line in your Rare but Real Walk T-shirt, we’ll be waiting with your well-deserved medal.

Every step you take. Every smile you make. Every pound you raise. It will all give hope to the sarcoma community.

Volunteer at a Rare but Real

We need fantastic volunteers to help us on the day at each location across the UK. You’ll be helping us support our walkers.

Our volunteer roles are open to everyone. You don’t need any experience, just a good team spirit and plenty of enthusiasm.

FAQs

Who can take part?

Rare but Real Walks are open to anyone. Children need to have an adult register them on their behalf. Families can also come on the day to cheer on their family members along the route and/or support them on site.

How much is it to take part in Rare but Real?

All location walks will have their own registration fee. Sarcoma UK also encourages everyone who takes part to raise £100.

If you choose to do your own Rare but Real, it’s free.

I can no longer take part, can my friend take my place?

Yes. Please call 0207 856 0445 or email fundraising@sarcoma.org.uk and we will be able to amend your booking.

Can I take part as a team?

Yes of course. Each team member will need to be registered to the event, so one person can register the entire group or everyone can register individually. You can then create a GiveStar page for your team to help with that all important fundraising. Why not give your team a name so that everyone knows who you are.

Can I volunteer?

Yes absolutely!

There are two main volunteer roles at Rare but Real locations:

• Event Village Volunteer
• Route Marshal Volunteer

If you have a preferred role, you can select this during registration and we will do our best to assign you to this role.

On each page location there is a chance to register to become a volunteer.

What is an Event Village Volunteer?

  • You’ll be welcoming and registering our walkers in the event village.
  • You’ll also be cheering and handing out medals at the finish line.
  • You’ll be that friendly face, making sure our walkers get the support and encouragement they need, when they need it.

What is a Route Volunteer?

• You’ll be directing and cheering-on our walkers along the route.
• You may also be asked to take part in our children’s scavenger hunt.
• You’ll be that friendly face, making sure our walkers get the support and encouragement they need, when they need it.

How do I find out more about being a volunteer?

You can fill out one of our application forms here.

You can also email: fundraising@sarcoma.org.uk

You will receive all the information you need 2 weeks before event day, but if you have any questions, please get in touch with us.

‘When my brother was diagnosed with sarcoma, I was shocked by how few people in our circle had heard of it. Events like this aren’t just about raising funds – they’re about making the invisible visible. That’s why I’ll be walking alongside all of you this summer.’
