Sarcoma UK microscope researcher

Sarcoma UK supports the principle of using live animals in research when it is necessary to advance understanding of sarcoma and to develop new treatments for patients. As a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), we adhere to the principles of Animal Research agreed by the over 140 constituent charities in the AMRC.

We do not take the decision to fund animal research lightly. We will only support research involving animals when there is no alternative available, and the vast majority of the research we fund is carried out without involving animals. At present, a small number of our funded research projects do involve animal research.

Sarcoma UK is committed to funding high-quality animal research that is well-designed, uses rigorous and expert peer review, is well-reported and ethically justified. In addition, our funded researchers fully comply with the AMRC’s requirements for animal welfare, and we actively employ the 3R's of reduction, replacement and refinement as basic principles of humane animal research. We also commit to communicating openly about our research involving animals, in line with the AMRC's position as a signatory on the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research.
