Statement from Kerry Reeves-Kneip, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Sarcoma UK, responding to the King’s cancer message
‘We are deeply grateful to His Majesty The King for his candour in delivering such a personal and powerful public service message. We welcome the good news that the King’s treatment will be reduced in the new year. It is a great message of hope, especially during this season, and demonstrates exactly why early diagnosis is so vital.
‘At Sarcoma UK, we know first hand the importance of early diagnosis in saving lives. This is why we have focused our efforts on raising public awareness of sarcoma and the critical need to spot these rare cancers early. The King’s message resonates profoundly with our community – early detection truly does transform treatment journeys and gives patients the precious gift of hope.
‘However, people spotting the signs early must be matched by a health system that ensures the infrastructure is there to deliver early diagnosis. This is particularly crucial when it comes to rare cancers like sarcoma. Our Unique Among Cancers report revealed the troubling reality that one in three people wait six months or more to be diagnosed with sarcoma. These delays can have devastating consequences.
‘His Majesty’s courage in sharing his experience helps break down the barriers of fear and embarrassment that too often prevent people from seeking help. We echo his call to action – if you notice unusual lumps, persistent pain, or symptoms that concern you, please don’t wait. Speak to your GP.
‘We join the King in expressing our profound gratitude to the doctors, nurses, researchers, and charity workers who form that remarkable “community of care” around every cancer patient. Together, we can ensure that early diagnosis becomes the norm, not the exception.’
