Monday 1 July marks the beginning of Sarcoma Awareness Month, with this year’s theme ‘Don’t Delay’ emphasising the critical importance of early diagnosis in sarcoma cases.
Sarcoma UK is spearheading the initiative with its innovative ‘Days to Diagnosis’ campaign, featuring real patient stories that highlight the varied experiences in obtaining a sarcoma diagnosis.
The campaign will showcase these personal journeys through nationwide billboard displays, social media engagement and press coverage. A dedicated microsite will host in-depth case studies, provide essential information about sarcoma, available support, and Sarcoma UK’s efforts to improve early diagnosis for patients and healthcare professionals. Visitors to the site can also contribute their own ‘Days to Diagnosis’ experiences, fostering a community of shared knowledge and support.
This year’s Sarcoma Awareness Month aims to reach new audiences unfamiliar with sarcoma while demonstrating to existing supporters our crucial work in promoting early diagnosis. The campaign will use various media channels, including press, TV and radio, to highlight Sarcoma UK’s ongoing research, policy initiatives, and support services related to early diagnosis.
Richard Davidson, Chief Executive of Sarcoma UK, emphasised the campaign’s significance: ‘Our ‘Days to Diagnosis’ initiative reveals a stark reality – the path to a sarcoma diagnosis is often fraught with challenges. Many healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with sarcoma symptoms, and the referral process can be frustratingly complex and inconsistent across regions. This can lead to misdiagnoses, delayed diagnoses, or symptoms being overlooked entirely. Moreover, our understanding of sarcoma’s causes and potential targeted treatments remains limited. That’s why this year’s theme, ‘Don’t Delay’, is so crucial. We’re committed to raising awareness, improving diagnostic processes, and ensuring that everyone affected by sarcoma receives timely, effective care. Every day counts in the fight against this rare cancer.’
