Survivor Story: Darrell McDonald

Meet Darrell McDonald, a 44-year-old from Twickenham.

At the age of 40, Darrell McDonald received a sarcoma diagnosis on his birthday in June 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the restrictions on support from family and friends during that time, Darrell maintained an inspiring resilience and positive outlook throughout his arduous cancer journey.

Darrell had treatment for lesions in his neck, lungs and brain which began with six rounds of harsh inpatient chemotherapy, consisting of doxorubicin and ifosfamide, which he describes as “really tough.” He says during one of his treatments he blacked out in the bathroom and hit his head on a sink. The tumours on his brain were treated using pioneering cyberknife technology. This year he celebrated his 44th Birthday. He is still undergoing treatment.

Approximately two years after his diagnosis, Darrell channelled his experiences and emotions into writing the book Straight Red, a blend of fiction and non-fiction. Encouraged by others who witnessed his resilience and positivity, he decided to share his story in hopes of helping others facing similar battles.

In his own words, Darrell emphasises the importance of cherishing each day, regardless of the uncertainties that lie ahead. “We may have a long time or we may have a short time, but that is not a reason not to enjoy it,” he says, advocating for savouring life’s simple pleasures and quality time with loved ones.

Darrell’s advocacy extends beyond his personal experiences, as he aims to raise awareness about sarcoma, a rare and underfunded cancer type. The profits from Straight Red are being donated to Sarcoma UK, with the hope of contributing to future research and supporting a larger community impacted by this disease.
