        Meet Darrell

Darrell McDonald’s journey with synovial soft tissue cancer began on his 40th birthday in June 2020, amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite initial struggles in getting diagnosed, scans revealed the presence of sarcoma in Darrell’s neck, brain, and lungs, making it incurable. He faced the difficulties head-on, undergoing extensive chemotherapy and targeted CyberKnife radiation. Though these treatments brought challenges, Darrell remained positive, grateful for the support from family, friends, and his workplace.

In the midst of the tough diagnosis, Darrell found some silver linings. He emphasises the impact of mindset on his journey, influenced by his father’s advice to enjoy life, regardless of its length. Darrell stresses the importance of creating special moments, spending time with loved ones, and focusing on a good quality of life.

Inspired by his diagnosis, Darrell wrote the book Straight Red, blending fiction and non-fiction to share his sarcoma journey. The book conveys the idea that odds are just numbers, emphasising the importance of life and quality of life. Darrell encourages a positive mindset, self-belief, and making positive changes. Profits from the book go to Sarcoma UK, contributing to raising awareness and supporting research on this rare cancer.
