All about sponsoring a scientist

Be a part of the next breakthrough in pioneering sarcoma research.

Thank you for taking an interest in supporting our research programme with a regular gift to our charity. A regular donation will go towards our research fund and help us plan for our future projects. Your consistent support ensures cutting-edge programmes across the UK can push forward without interruption, accelerating discoveries that could save countless lives.

Research gives hope
As you may already be aware, Sarcoma UK is unique in being the only charity in the UK to focus on all types of sarcoma. Thanks to help like yours, we have invested over £8 million in nearly 100 research projects across the UK since 2009. However, there is still so much more to be done. Treatments can be limited for sarcomas and very few new treatment options have been developed in years. We need your help to invest in
hope for the future.

Our charity funds both laboratory-based and clinic-based research to reveal the cause of sarcoma, find solutions, improve diagnosis and care and find kinder treatments for patients, as well as informing our campaigning for awareness, improvement in policy and clinical reform. We have funded several pioneer researchers at the early stages of their careers who are becoming leaders in their field sarcoma research to grow and flourish.

Research drives transformation: The power of your support

The support given to researchers and PhD students creates a vibrant research community which helps to increase our understanding of sarcoma such as why people become resistant to chemotherapy drugs. Our funded research has hugely advanced our understanding of sarcoma and developed initiatives to
improve quality of life, for example:

Exploring why sarcoma is sarcoma – Led by Professor Adrienne Flanagan, a team of scientific experts from across the UK catalogued the sarcoma data held by Genomics England and built a dataset that would be readily available for research. The team examined the breadth of variation in genetic mutations across sarcoma for the first time, creating one of the largest and most comprehensive libraries of genetic drivers in sarcoma in the world. Research like this helps people like Rachel:

Rachel had genome sequencing and the results helped identify the most suitable treatments for her, along with ones she wouldn’t be able to tolerate. The process indicated that Rachel’s type of sarcoma could be hereditary, enabling her family to be eligible for screening. It also highlighted she was at a higher risk of developing other rare cancers, which she is now screened for annually.

Testing has been really helpful to me and my family. It’s been reassuring to be regularly screened for other cancers and to know that my doctors are using the best information available to them to treat me.

When you become a regular giver and sponsor a scientist, you will receive:
Personal updates about some of our research projects and the difference your funds are making
An opportunity to meet the scientists through a short introductory biography telling you more about them, their inspiration and work.
Priority booking for Sarcoma UK special events including our Christmas Carol Concert and invitations to any special talks or events related to our research.

Small, regular donations are vital for our charity. They provide us with a regular income to help us plan and confidently commit to funding more research projects. From as little as £1 a month, you can set up a regular gift by direct debit and help sponsor a scientist. To set up your regular gift, visit our sponsor a scientist page.
