Gareth Veal is Professor of Cancer Pharmacology at the Newcastle University Cancer Centre. He lectures undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, chairs the pharmacology subgroup for the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) and is a member of many national and international cancer groups.
He heads the Newcastle Cancer Centre Pharmacology Group who won the CCLG Innovation in Practice Award 2022 for setting up a national Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) programme, optimising the UK-wide treatment of childhood cancer patients. His research group focuses on understanding the pharmacology of anticancer drugs and developing clinical biomarkers, predominantly involving the running of clinical trials involving both new and well established treatments for children and adults to enhance drug use and personalise treatment.
Professor Veal obtained his degree and PhD in pharmacology at the University of Liverpool before pursuing research at Harvard Medical School in the US. He returned to the UK take up a position at Newcastle University.
