Mike and his experience with genomic testing

Meet Mike.

Mike was diagnosed with myxoid liposarcoma in July 2023.

After his biopsy results came back, his consultant offered him a type of genomic test called whole genome sequencing.

“My consultant gave me a leaflet that explained the purpose of genomic testing: to find a genetic link between my cancer and genome.

I was told that the test results could also help to improve future therapies and treatment options for sarcoma.”

The consultant and Mike discussed:

  • The benefits of genomic testing, such as help in improving treatment options.
  • The fact that genomic tests can also help to find anything unrelated to someone’s cancer.
  • The fact that it wasn’t certain that Mike would benefit. But, the test results would help future generations.

After the discussion, the consultant encouraged Mike to think about it and talk about it with his wife. However, he agreed right away. A nurse specialist took a blood sample to go with the remaining cell sample from his biopsy.

After receiving his test results, the consultant told Mike that there were no genetic changes in his germline. This means that his sarcoma cannot be passed on to his children and grandchildren.

He also learned of genetic changes in his tumour, which could help to decide on future cancer treatments if needed.

The data from Mike’s test results will be added to a genomics database. The data will contribute towards better and more personalised treatments for people with sarcoma in the future.

“I’m shocked that it is not being routinely offered.

Genomic testing should be part of the protocol for treating people with sarcoma. It’s an emerging area with huge potential benefits.

There are so many types of sarcomas, and the causes are not clear. It seems likely to me that there are genetic factors involved.”

Even though Mike knew what he agreed to, he felt overwhelmed by the information given to him after his diagnosis and couldn’t take it all in at the time.

We want everyone diagnosed with sarcoma to feel informed about genomic testing. Our new information hub explains more about how it works and the benefits.
