Karen Atkins is happier in the saddle but she’s ditching the bike this one time to take on the Virgin Money London Marathon for Sarcoma UK.
Even though running the London Marathon is ‘completely outside my comfort zone’, Karen, from Milton Keynes, has steadily racked up the miles training for the big event on 28 April. 'This will be my first (and only!) marathon!'
Last year, Karen’s mother, Celia was diagnosed with sarcoma after finding a lump on her thigh. After radiotherapy and surgery, Celia’s prognosis is good and she has recently been given the all clear. ‘I am in complete awe of how my mum and dad have dealt with this whole episode, and the support they have received from Sarcoma UK’.
Karen has been successful with her fundraising at work. ‘I have a tuck box in the staff tea area (undercutting the vending machine) and I’ve brought in chocolate bar cake, ginger breakfast muffins and chocolate breakfast muffins. There is often cake in the building so I wasn’t sure people would actually pay for it!’
After the Marathon, there won’t be much time to rest as Karen hops back on the bike for a 550km trip to Paris in May. ‘I have cycled 100km before but not for 5 days in a row!
