Tonight,  from 7pm, Channel 4 News are broadcasting a news item investigating gynaecological sarcomas and power morcellation (a technique for treating fibroids). It highlights concerns about a potential risk of spreading undiagnosed sarcoma if this surgical approach is used.

Health Correspndant, Victoria Macdonald interviews our Chief Executive, Lindsey Bennister for a Channel 4 exclusive.

Lindsey  said: "We are very concerned about this potential risk and we are calling for urgent action to identify the level of risk in the UK to women with as-yet undiagnosed sarcomas who may be treated for fibroids using this technique.

We call on gynaecologists and gynae-oncologists to recognise this potential risk and to work together with sarcoma specialists to develop clear guidelines on the treatment and management of women with suspected and diagnosed gynaecological sarcomas."

Our briefing contains advice to women who may be offered this procedure or have already had it.  PDF iconmorcellation_briefing23oct.pdf

NICE has withdrawn its current guidance on hysteroscopic morcellation for fibroids, following lobbying by Sarcoma UK & sarcoma experts.
